The link between the royal family and the military

The coronation of King Charles III takes place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6 and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. King Charles III will be crowned alongside the Queen Consort.

We are a company with deep ties with the military community. Our founder, Ian Williams, served in the Welsh Guards for ten years. Military tradition is an integral part of the history and identity of our royal family, and in this blog, we take a look at the link between the royal family and the military.

Members of the royal family have a long-standing tradition of serving in the British Armed Forces, and this tradition dates back several centuries. One of the most notable aspects of the royal family's military tradition is that many of its members have served in the armed forces during times of war. Both Prince William and Prince Harry served in the British Army, with Prince Harry serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan. Queen Elizabeth II also served in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II, and several of her family members also served in the military during that conflict.

Another important aspect of the military tradition of the UK royal family is that many of its members hold ceremonial positions within the armed forces. For example, the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in April 2021, held the rank of Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy, Field Marshal in the British Army, and Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Other members of the royal family hold similar ceremonial positions, such as the Duke of Cambridge, who is Honorary Air Commandant of the RAF Air Cadets and Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy's Small Ships and Diving Operations.

The royal family's military tradition is also reflected in its formal dress, which includes military uniforms for certain occasions. A great example of this is the King's (formally Queen’s) Guard, who are responsible for guarding royal palaces, who wear distinctive red tunics and bearskin hats that are based on the uniforms of the 18th-century British Army.

The military tradition of the UK royal family is an important part of its heritage and continues to be a significant aspect of its public role and identity.

We too have a strong bond to the Armed Forces and do our utmost to support the veteran community where we can. We have a strong track record of hiring from within the veteran community, as well as those who share the same core values, which is important to us.
