As 2022 is coming to a close and we look forward to the new year, we have compiled some unique news stories involving cleaning from the past year.
The cleaning dust devil of Mars
A new study from NASA’s Perseverance rover picked up the noise of a dust devil, a short-lived whirlwind loaded with dust that form between varying ground and air temperatures, which actually cleaned the solar panels in the process!
Dust storms were depicted in the 2015 sci-fi movie “The Martian”, but in reality, they are nowhere near as extreme. The sound, which came from a dust devil measuring 118 metres (390 feet) high and 25 metres wide that passed directly over the rover, had never before been recorded by NASA.
Eggs could be the newest cleaning product
Recent research has found that eggs can be used to ensure the cleanliness of water. According to the ground-breaking new research, freeze dried and super-heated egg whites can remove salt and microplastics from seawater with 98 percent and 99 percent efficiency respectively.
Reason being, Egg whites are a complex system of almost pure protein, and when freeze dried and heated to 900 degrees Celsius in an environment without oxygen, they form an interconnected structure of carbon strands and graphene sheets.
This is important as if the group can refine the fabrication process, it could help with water purification on a larger scale. More on this story can be found here.
Japan fans clear up at Qatar World Cup
You may have read about this feel-good story from this year’s World Cup, where Japan fans once again showed class and environmental awareness by helping clean the stadium after the opening game.
They did this despite their team not featuring in the opening match, which involved Qatar and Ecuador, but took it upon themselves to go around the stadium and pick up litter at full-time. The kind-hearted gesture stunned the Qatari locals and when asked why, one Japanese fan replied: “Japanese people never leave rubbish behind. We respect the place.”
This is not the first time that Japanese fans have helped in the clean up activities, having done so during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In 2018, similar scenes were witnessed even after a heart-breaking defeat for Japan, their players made the effort to leave the changing rooms in immaculate condition, which also extended to the fans in the stadium.
Cleaning your smartphone in the toilet
Smartphones are estimated to be ten times dirtier than your average toilet seat - McDonald's is tackling the issue in Japan by letting people wash their phones and hands at the same time. Branches of McDonald's in Japan have now installed phone cleaning stations which can sanitise your device in seconds.
Visitors to McDonald's toilets only have to place their smartphone in a small slot next to the sink. It's then automatically lowered into the port and disinfected before ejecting the phone.
The company behind the gadget claim that it can kill 99.9% of all germs in under 30 seconds using UV lights.
Aliens spotted in Reading skies
Residents of Reading were left perplexed when a mysterious blue light was spotted in the sky. The light received widespread speculation as onlookers sparked weird theories about the lights. One of the theories offered on social media was that the light was of extra-terrestrial origin, but the reality was that the light is linked to a specialist rail work repairs train from Network Rail.
The repair train is laser-guided, which is what produced the blue light in the sky. The ‘high output ballast cleaner’ marks out zones for the workforce. After some speculation and conspiracies, it turns out it was nothing to worry about!
