Deep cleaning: dos and don’ts

Deep cleaning is typically used in commercial settings where hygiene standards need to be met and there is contact with the public. Its benefits include minimising the risk and spread of foodborne diseases as well as viruses, ensuring that the premises is in compliance with health regulations as well as improving employee and customer satisfaction.

We have compiled a list of dos and don’ts while deep cleaning below.

1. Disinfect before cleaning

This is a common mistake that is actually detrimental to cleaning an area. You cannot disinfect a dirty area, as the disinfectant will not get rid of dust, allergens or stains that might be present on a surface. Applying sanitiser to a dirty surface will actually lock the dirt in. Instead, the area should be thoroughly cleaned with the appropriate cleaning products before finally disinfecting. Disinfecting should be the final touch, not the starting point. For more on the differences between cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting, click here.

2. Avoid starting from the floor

It may seem logical to start your deep clean from the floor, but this is another mistake. It is best practice to start from the top and work your way down, as removing light fixtures, moving furniture and other décor may counteract the cleaning you have already done. Just as disinfecting should be your final task, the floor should be the final area of the premises to be cleaned.

3. Move furniture – do not miss the details

A deep clean is not a deep clean if you have not moved furniture to access hard to reach areas. These areas are where most of the dirt will accumulate and is a prime hiding space for insects and the like. The distinguishing factor of deep cleaning is in the meticulous detail. A deep clean is a professional standard of cleaning that is more extensive than everyday cleaning tasks.

4. Don’t forget appliances

Appliances are often overlooked during deep cleans, but as previously mentioned, deep cleaning is all about detail. Pay special care to microwaves, kettles, and refrigerators as these are high contact areas of a workplace and will be a breeding ground for dirt and germs.

5. Don’t use antibacterial products to kill viruses

Another common mistake when it comes to cleaning in general. The use of antibacterial wipes, and sprays is still important, but using virucidal agents is what will kill viruses and protect you from viral infections when coming into contact with an affected surface.

We have written a blog recently detailing the importance of killing viruses in the workplace during the winter months, which you can read here.
